Early in his carrier John Clarke signed all of his work with a last name of “Clark.” However, to not be confused with other artists he later changed his spelling to “Clarke.” John also signed with his Indian name “Cutapuis” translated as “Man Who Talks Not” and pronounced CU-TA-PU-IE. JL Clarke is the most common way he signed his work. Occasionally Clarke would identify where he sculpted the piece. Almost every single carving was signed, as John Louis Clarke was extremely proud of his work.
